An early John Waters opus tops this June film lineup
by Anthony Glassman
The dawn of Gay Pride Month is a joyous event; the fact that it is accompanied by another month of programming at the Cleveland Cinematheque, northeast Ohio's premier outlet for foreign, independent and art-house films, makes it that much sweeter. The first film of specific interest to LGBT
Hey, Happy!
audiences in June is John Waters' 1975 Female Trouble, starring the incomparable Divine in perhaps the only film in history where the star engages in criminal sexual assault on him/herself.
For those unfamiliar with the early oeuvre of the Prince of Puke, as Waters has been dubbed, the film is about a suburban girl who goes horribly, horribly astray in revenge for her parents' refusal to buy her cha-cha heels for Christmas.
She meanders through a number of careers and crimes before her hot date with the electric chair.
Female Trouble plays Friday and Sunday, June 7 and 9 at 10 pm and 8:50 pm respectively, and no one under 18 will be admitted.
The Cinematheque follows that up with Canadian director Noam Gonick's Hey, Happy!, the bastard love child of Toronto underground filmmaking legend Bruce LaBruce and once-indie-now-not director Gregg Araki.
Imagine it's the end of the world, and you're in Winnipeg. That's in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Most people who aren't in Winnipeg are pleased with that fact, and those who are in Winnipeg tend to wish they weren't.
The Red River is expected to reach recordhigh levels, flooding the lowlands of the city. Against this backdrop, rave DJ and porn peddler Sabu is trying to complete his surprisingly innocent quest of schtupping 2,000 men. He's almost there, just one to go, giving entirely new meaning to the Prince lyric, "Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1999."
He has set his eye on jolly paranoid schizophrenic Happy, who has been charged with sandbagging some municipal buildings but keeps getting distracted by the aliens talking to him through the radio slung across his chest.
Unfortunately for Sabu, evil hairstylist Spanky will use everything in his bitchyqueeny and apparently mystical arsenal to
stop him and have Happy for himself.
If this sounds incoher-
ent, you haven't done enough drugs. Do not watch this film sober. This is your only warning.
On the plus side, it's got a great soundtrack that represents a number of styles of techno, house and drum and bass music, and the film is actually kind of cute in a postmodern post-punk existentialist sort of way. Hey, Happy! will be shown Thursday and Sunday, July 20 and 23 at 7 pm and 9:05 pm, respectively.
In between the two showings of Hey. Happy!, watch for the return of The Fluffer on Saturday, June 22 at 9:25. This tale of a lovelorn boy who falls for a porn star, begins working for the studio that makes his films and establishes one of the most dysfunctional relationships in the history of queer film was so popular that they had to bring it back for another showing.
Finally, the Cinematheque wraps up the month with the latest film from gay Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, Silence.. We're Rolling.
The film takes a look at glamorous diva and actress Malak whose private life is far more interesting than any of the lives she portrays. Her husband, a lawyer, is looking for a divorce, while Malak is being ruthlessly exploited by a devious lover. A lovestruck screenwriter wants to win her heart. Her daughter wants to marry the chauffeur's son. What is a star of her magnitude to do in this outrageous comedy from the Middle East?
Skoot Hansawwar (the Egyptian title) plays on June 29 at 9:40 pm and June 30 at 4 pm. Unlike the other films, which are $6 per person, $4 for Cleveland Institute of Art students and Cinematheque members, this one is $7 and $5, and no passes will be accepted.
The Cinematheque is located inside the institute at 11141 East Boulevard, Cleveland. They can be reached online at http:// www.cia.edu/cinematheque or at 216-
421-7450.
